TAILGATING INFORMATION:

Phoenix International Raceway, being in Avondale Arizona, typically has really nice weather and is really dry. Make sure to have a lot of fresh water on hand so you do not become dehydrated while tailgating in this beautiful part of the country. When thinking of foods to enjoy, think south-western. Spanish influences run deep through the cuisine of this region of the country as well as all american BBQ. Tailgate with care and try to remember to drink water as you may not notice the heat in this dry environment. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the U.S. and you should be able to find any tailgating supplies you need there while passing through. Scottsdale, Mesa and Glendale are a stones throw away from Avondale also.

There is lots of parking, camping as well as RV parking around the Phoenix International Raceway. Information about what the specific policies are available in the fan guide. NOTE: If you are bringing a cooler inside the Phoenix International Raceway make sure it is 6x6x12 inches or smaller. You may bring one clear plastic bag, no larger than 18x18x4 inches. Arizona state liquor laws prohibit alcohol from being brought onto the track property. Also, no glass containers are allowed in the grandstands or hillside.

PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

Phoenix International Raceway or just PIR, is a one mile tri-oval race track located in Avondale, Arizona. It opened in 1964, but wasn't used by NASCAR until 1988, with the first race won by the late Alan Kulwicki, where he debuted his Polish Victory Lap).

It is an unusual tri-oval shape, more like a "D" shape. This is because the owner did not wish to alter the infield road course to accommodate a traditional NASCAR oval.

It has since been used by the Indy Racing League and an infield road course has been used by the Grand American Road Racing Association.

In 2005, the track hosted a second NASCAR race, replacing the spring race formerly held at Darlington Raceway, in South Carolina.

TRIVIA

November 6, 1988: Alan Kulwicki wins at Phoenix International Raceway for his first career NASCAR Winston Cup win. It is the first NASCAR Winston Cup event on the one-mile track.

February 5, 1995: NASCAR launches the Craftsman Truck Series with and 80-lap race at Phoenix International Speedway. Mike Skinner becomes the series' first winner after qualifying 16th.
